The book’s theme deals with the struggle of the tea plantation labourers during the period after Independence. The Left Trade Union Movement in the tea plantation sector of the Brahmaputra valley of Assam is the focal point of the book. Sometimes, the movement is organised formally under Trade Unions, and sometimes it is violent in nature. The left Trade Union Movement is influenced by Left political ideologies of CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML). The story revolves around the struggles of the daily-wage labourers against the giant capitalist class. The labourers have been fighting just to fulfill their basic demands, which the proprietor class have just been ignoring in most cases, leading to industrial disputes. The book rides on this theme of mass protest in an industrial atmosphere.
