The present book viz., A Handbook to Teaching Communicative English (For Research students) is a successful attempt to teach English to ESL students through communicative approach. Several practical tasks are suggested to practice speaking English in a normal class room by an English making learning
live and interesting. The communicative approach to teaching of English is
organized on the basis of certain communicative functions, such as apologizing,
describing, inviting, promising etc. that the ESL learners need to know. It
explains the language in terms of the functions it performs. This approach does
not ignore the role of grammar in the process of language learning, but it insists
that the grammatical rules are useless unless they are applied to real-life
situations Communicative approach focuses on the significance of language
functions because the learner needs knowledge of both meaning and functions.
It lays emphasis on functional, communicative and social interactive activities.
The basis of each lesson is a problem or a task and the conduct of the lessons
consists of setting the task, demonstrating ways of tackling it and, in the
process, giving some pupils a chance to attempt it, then getting all the pupils to
attempt and, finally giving each pupil a rough indication of the measure of his
success. The function of the task is to bring about a self-reliant effort by the
learners. Tasks consist of : interpreting a schedule, giving a set of directions,

Meet the Author

Dr. N. Badhri (1956) a teaching practitioner for four decades, commenced his career as a humble teacher and raised up to university level. Having accomplished his Ph.D. in Education and English, he is also possessing post-graduation Degrees in four disciplines including one in Education. He is also a recipient of NCERT award in the year 1997-98. The author has been contributing resources to the Department of Education, Kancheepuram District with the insights he acquired from his Ph.D. researches. He has also attended several national level seminars and authored 13 research articles. Many of his papers have been published in journals such as Experiments in Education, the Educational review, and ELTAI, etc. Encouraging peer researchers with his professional expertise is his useful hobby. As a co-guide, he has guided several scholars for M.Phil so far. He has proved his excellence in utilizing All India Radio as a powerful mass media and presented many programs for children in learning English. This experience made him becoming a member of the consultative panel for Educational Broadcast, All India Radio, nominated by the Government of India. He has also served as a resource person for personal contact programs of various Universities. Further, he has served in a college of Education as Principal and Director for five years. In and around his native Madhurantakam, he has gained reputation as a counselor for youths who seek clarification in English Learning. He is also the founder Secretary of My English learning Academy (MELA)which is working for the promotion of English to Everyone.
